- Kind of VegetablesPepper
Summer brings an assortment of chile peppers grown in our local Santa Maria and Los Alamos Valleys'. Varieties may include; Jalapeno, Serrano, Anaheim, Pasilla (Poblano) or Yellow Wax. Chile peppers are mostly available during the late summer to early Fall from our local fields, then beginning in the late Fall through Spring peppers are brought in (limited quantities) from our growers in the Baja region of Mexico.
Chile peppers are a mainstay in Latin cuisine and for some Asian entrees. In our community we enjoy "Santa Maria style BBQ." Chile peppers are often sliced in half lengthwise (remove the seeds) and stuffed with bleu cheese. The cheese stuffed peppers are then grilled over the oak wood BBQ pit until the pepper is lightly browned and the cheese is melted, delicious appetizers!
